Formula
The standard metric formula divides your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. If using imperial units, the tool divides your weight in pounds by your height in inches squared, and then multiplies the result by a standard conversion factor of 703.
Examples
Using the metric system, a height of 175 centimeters and a weight of 70 kilograms results in a BMI of 22.9. This falls within the 18.5 to 24.9 range, placing the individual in the healthy 'Normal Weight' category.
Using standard imperial measurements, a person who is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 195 pounds has a BMI of 28.8. Because this score is between 25.0 and 29.9, it is classified as 'Overweight' according to WHO guidelines.
